Former Heat editor Mark Frith is stepping down as editor of Time Out London after two and a half years in the post, it has been announced.

Frith was credited with revolutionising Heat magazine in 2002 when he started publishing embarrassing photos of celebrities on the cover.

He quit as editor of Heat in 2008 to write a memoir documenting his eight years in the job, before taking charge of Time Out at a time when the magazine was struggling to compete with rival listings titles and review websites.

Time Out's chief executive David King said: "Mark has helped us through a period of huge change. He has been a great ambassador for the magazine and I have really enjoyed working with an editor with such a strong, commercial focus. His impact has been substantial and we wish him well."

Frith added: "I've loved my two and a half years at Time Out and am over the moon with the success we've had but I'm very ambitious and feel now is the right time to take on a new challenge. To leave on the high of our second PPA 'Magazine Of The Year' win is just perfect."

Time Out's content director Tim Arthur will become acting editor of the magazine until a permanent replacement for Frith is found.
