England's World Cup exit at the hands of Portugal was watched in 19 million homes across the country.
According to overnight ratings an average of 16.2 million households tuned in for the game, shown live on BBC One on Saturday, with viewer figures peaking at 19 million.
However the game failed to match the 19.9 million that watched England's group game with Sweden on 20 June and was almost five million viewers down on England's exit from Euro 2004.
A BBC spokeswoman said Saturday was a good day for BBC Sport, with a further 3.9 million homes tuning in to BBC Two, to watch Andy Murray's victory over Andy Roddick at Wimbledon.
