The host was criticised for appearing to make light of the country's slums and its poor living standards during Wednesday's Top Gear.
Speaking about a car with a toilet installed at the back, Clarkson said: "This is perfect for India because everyone who comes here gets the trots."
One viewer tweeted: "Whats wrong with the BBC that they think casual racist stereotyping is acceptable on top gear? (sic)"
The BBC has confirmed to The Daily Telegraph that it has received 23 complaints from disgruntled viewers.
A spokesperson said: "If viewers or religious groups want to complain, they can complain to the BBC. We won't be responding through the media."
This represents the second time Clarkson has caused controversy in as many months; in November, the 51-year-old called for striking public sector workers to be "executed in front of their families".
Top Gear was also in the spotlight earlier this year after Richard Hammond branded Mexicans "lazy, feckless [and] flatulent".
