Katie Price, Cher Lloyd Snickers Twitter adverts cleared by ASA

By
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has cleared a series of tweets from celebrities advertising Snickers chocolate bars.

In the campaign, stars like Katie Price and Cher Lloyd made several out-of-character comments, before a final tweet including the strapline: "You're not you when you're hungry."

The ASA launched an investigation after receiving two complaints.

It has now ruled that the first four tweets in each series were "teasers" and posted in quick succession, and that the final tweet in each batch, which included #hungry #spon [sponsored] and @snickersUK were highlighted clearly enough as to not mislead consumers.

"We considered the combination of those elements was sufficient to make clear the tweets were advertising and that consumers would then understand each series of tweets was a marketing communication," it said.

"We considered it was acceptable that the first four tweets were not individually labelled as being part of the overall marketing communications. We therefore concluded that the ads did not breach the Code."

This marks the first time the ASA has made a ruling regarding marketing on Twitter.
