The 2006 BBC Sports Personality of the Year will be broadcast from the Birmingham NEC, taking the programme outside of London for the first time in its 53-year history.

The move has been made to allow the BBC to host a bigger, "public" event, which can not be accommodated at Television Centre in London.

3,000 tickets for the ceremony will available to the general public at £25 per ticket and go on sale from the NEC box office at 9am on Monday, October 16.

Roger Mosey, BBC director of sport, said: "This is a landmark decision for BBC Sports Personality of the Year as not only is it unparalleled that we are heading out of London but thousands of sports fans are also going to have the chance to come and see the show for the first time.

"We're delighted to be heading to Birmingham as it was a clear choice for the 2006 Awards. The city has a superb pedigree for sport having staged more major sporting championships than any other European city in the last four years."

The BBC says no profit will be made from the tickets and all money will go towards the cost of staging the event, which will be broadcast live on BBC One on December 10.

Mosey added: "We're very much looking forward to this year's main award too as it's a very open contest where there's no obvious winner."
