Mike Lewis, the series producer of Real Story with Fiona Bruce is to leave the show to become editor of ITV1's Tonight with Trevor McDonald.
Lewis previously worked on Tonight as deputy editor when the show started in 1999.
The move has fuelled rumours of the BBC axing Real Story and moving Panorama into the show's Monday night slot. A BBC spokesman said Real Story was commissioned until Christmas and nothing had been confirmed.
Lewis has worked at BBC current affairs since 2001 and was executive producer on the recent Panorama investigation into Jill Dando's killer. Prior to the BBC he worked at Granada for 13 years as a producer.
Lewis told Broadcast: "ITV has a fantastic commitment to current affairs. With two weekly episodes of Tonight With Trevor McDonald they have showed they can deliver the biggest audiences to the best stories week in week out. I am looking forward to re-joining old friends at ITV, especially Sir Trevor, and the challenge of building on their previous success."
