A 42-year-old woman has been arrested today by police officers investigating alleged phone hacking by the newspapers, it has been confirmed.

The unnamed woman is being questioned at a south west London police station, after attending by appointment on Monday morning.

She was arrested on suspicion of money laundering offence, the Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

The arrest was made by officers from Operation Weeting, the police investigation into illegal interception of voicemails by the newspapers.

Operation Weeting was launched in January 2011 after police were handed new information by News International, the owner of the News of the World.

The Sunday tabloid was shut down six months later after a string of allegations about hacking.
