Ofcom announced today that a new DAB national commercial radio multiplex will be advertised in November.
Currently there is only one DAB national commercial radio multiplex licence, operated by Digital One, which is co-owned by GCap and Arqiva and includes the DAB services of Classic FM, talkSPORT and Virgin Radio.
Ofcom has said that an additional multiplex will provide more choice for listeners.
Among other elements of each bid, Ofcom will take into account the extent each applicant will promote the development of digital radio UK, the potential coverage area offered and the timescales involved.
Digital One currently covers around 87% of the UK population from a total of 103 transmitters, with additional transmitters to be commissioned shortly.
Channel 4 is has reportedly said it will bid for the new multiplex, offering a series of branded stations. Channel 4 has already launched one digital station, offering original programming as well as TV tie-in shows.
Other potential bidders may include Chrysalis and Canadian group CanWest.
Following the announcement next month, there will be a three month period where potential bidders will be invited to apply, with the successful bidder expected to be confirmed by the spring.
