Danny Boyle has apologised for allowing details of the London 2012 opening ceremony to be leaked.

The acclaimed filmmaker, who is artistic director of the Olympic event on July 27, said that he did not anticipate the media scrutiny that followed the official unveiling of the show's 'British countryside' display.

Elements of the ceremony that have since been spoiled include an apparent industrial revolution-themed set piece and a tracklist featuring music as diverse as the Sex Pistols and the EastEnders theme tune.

In an email to the 10,000 members of the public taking part in the opening of the Games, Boyle wrote: "I am sorry that, despite our best efforts, we appear to be unable to stop these stories appearing in the press.

"Some of you have asked why we agreed to the two media briefings we have done when 'open season' continues on trying to reveal every aspect of our work to the public ahead of 27 July.

"We thought they would be a good way to satisfy the media's curiosity about our show but, in the case of certain papers, it hasn't quenched their desire to be the first to reveal every detail possible."

The message obtained by the BBC also urged participants to "stay virtuous" in the future and "protect the show".

Boyle previously declared that he is "astounded by the selfless dedication" of those taking part in the opening ceremony.

"They are the pure embodiment of the Olympic spirit and represent the best of who we are as a nation," he said.

Rehearsals for the ceremony are continuing at the Olympic Stadium in Stratford.
