Moyles confirmed his exit during a moving speech near the start of his programme, and will present his final show after eight years in September.

Grimshaw explained that he was only informed of his appointment by Radio 1 controller Ben Cooper yesterday.

"I found out yesterday morning. I thought I was in trouble with Ben. So I went in and I was complaining that I got up early," he told BBC News.

"And he's like, 'Well, you're going to have to start getting up a little bit earlier'.

"We were going to put it out yesterday, but then they decided not to. Which meant that I couldn't tell anyone for 24 hours, so I couldn't talk to anyone. It's been a weird day."

Digital Spy music editor Robert Copsey and Sugarscape editor Kate Lucey react to the news:

On Chris Moyles's announcement, he said: "I listened to Chris this morning and he was trailing this announcement for an hour.

"It was really emotional, I had a little cry."

Speaking about his love for the Breakfast Show, he explained: "The Radio 1 Breakfast Show is the only thing I've ever wanted to do since the age of 11.

"I remember wanting to do it. It was never a thing of 'I'd like to work on the radio', it was more that 'I want to present the Radio 1 Breakfast Show'.

"So I feel like a witch now that it's happened. It's really exciting, it's something I've always listened to. From Sara Cox, I listened to on the way to school, and I've listened to Chris every day."

He added: There will be pressure, I can't worry about that right now, we've just got to concentrate on our new show and work out what it's going to sound like."
