NGW to bid for second national multiplex

National Grid Wireless has confirmed that it will bid for the second national digital radio multiplex due to be advertised by communications regulator Ofcom next month.

There is currently only one national digital radio multiplex co-owned by GCap and Arqiva. Known as Digital One, it carries stations including Virgin Radio and Classic FM.

"The decision to bid for this licence is based on extensive consultation with the radio industry and we are confident that we can provide an open, non-competitive platform that will enable digital radio to achieve the next stage in its development," said Tony Moretta, general manager for broadcast at National Grid Wireless.

Channel 4 has already indicated that it intends to bid for the multiplex, with Chrysalis and CanWest also understood to be interested.
