In his first tweet, Cameron wrote: "I'm starting Conference with this new Twitter feed about my role as Conservative leader. I promise there won't be "too many tweets..."
This is perhaps a sly reference to Cameron's comments about Twitter in 2009, when he told Absolute Radio host Christian O'Connell: "Too many tweets might make a t**t."
The Prime Minister was later forced to apologise for his language.
Cameron's office already communicates via the @Number10gov Twitter account - however, as the new account is not run by civil servants, who are required to remain impartial, the Prime Minister will now be permitted to make political points.
