Marmaduke Hussey, BBC chairman from 1986 to 1996, has died aged 83.

During his time in the position the corporation saw rapid change in communications, and Hussey is credited with helping it prepare for the Internet and digital age. He is also known for facing up to political pressure which accused the BBC of left wing bias.

Current director general Mark Thompson paid tribute to Hussey in a statement. He said: "He will be remembered for his great vision, his integrity and his forthrightness, but also for his great personal kindness."

Other crises handled by Hussey include the resignation of his director general, Alasdair Milne, when he quit in 1987. His successor Michael Checkland then left in 1992, and Hussey faced fresh scandal when John Birt was appointed with freelance status to reduce his tax bill.

Acting BBC chairman Anthony Salz said: "We send our sincere condolences to Lady Hussey. He was a distinguished chairman of the BBC. He oversaw rapid change during that time and, before his retirement in 1996, he ensured that the BBC was in a strong position to lead the advent of the Internet and digital broadcasting."
