Sky+ tops 2 million mark

By
The number of Sky+ boxes installed in UK homes has reached 2 million according to Sky.

The PVR service will also be enhanced in the coming months by giving Sky+ customers the chance to enjoy a selection of the week's best programmes on-demand. The service will be available to more than one million Sky+ customers from launch, making use of additional recording capacity on the hard drive of more recent boxes.

The broadcaster has also released results from its Sky View panel, which provides measures how customers are using Sky+ to record or 'time-shift' television programmes.

Drama was found to be the most frequently recorded genre, accounting for 39.3% of all time-shifted viewing, with documentaries making up 14.9%, entertainment 13.0% and movies, 9.5%.

News and weather account for just 0.6% of time-shifted viewing by Sky+ viewers, while current affairs programmes account for 1.2%.

ITV1's The X Factor was the most popular amongst Sky+ users, with over 40% of viewers time-shifting the show. The talent contest also had the highest volume of time-shifted viewing for an individual programme with over one million people recording and watching, or pausing the October 7 episode that saw boy-band Avenue disqualified.

Eastenders was the top time-shifted soap, beating ITV1's Coronation Street which was nudged into fourth place by Channel 4's Big Brother.

Brian Sullivan, managing director, Sky Customer Group said: "Sky+ is enabling more and more people to get the most out of the nation's favourite pastimes. They are taking control of what they watch but also when they watch it by building their own TV schedules. Sky+ helps people make sense of the multi-channel world and to reach the 2 million mark is testament to our customers' appetite to fit TV around their busy lives"

Sky will no doubt be pleased to see that multi-million pound acquisition Lost made the top ten, with 22.4% of Sky+ viewers time-shifting the show, which arrived on Sky One in the autumn.
