GMG recruits Saga man to run Smooth

GMG Radio has recruited Saga Radio's Gavin McCroy to be the controller of reformatted station Smooth FM.
The move follows Ofcom's decision to allow GMG to change Smooth from a station playing soul and Motown to focus on an older audience with a more easy listening feel.
The new-look station launches on March 26 as Smooth Radio, bringing it in line with the company's sister brands in the North West and the recently acquired Saga stations.
Currently head of presentation at Saga Radio's digital operation, McCroy begins his role next week.
The group bought two Century stations from GCap Media in October, and then went on to acquire the Saga Radio stations in December, as well as the licence to launch another station this year.
This format is expected to be a speech and music format for the 35-64 year old market and would contain a strong commitment to local news, current affairs and interactive debate. The station will be launched in 2008.
Meanwhile, the radio group is expanding already after winning the FM licence up for grabs in Manchester, with its RockTalk format.
The 12-year licence means GMG now has 13 UK radio stations with a potential reach of a further 1.4 million adults.
