Ford had worked at Channel 5's director of acquisitions from its launch in 1997, but left to join Channel 4 in 2005.
He returned in 2009 and was in the role when the channel picked up Big Brother after it was axed by Channel 4.
In the summer, Ford defended the ratings for the reality show, which had averaged 1.6 million.
"The reason why it was down - we had to deal with one of the biggest, nastiest summers for any channel that's not the BBC, in terms of Wimbledon, the Euros..." Ford said.
"It's the lowest ever [figures for Big Brother] but this is Channel 5, it's not Channel 4. If you'd stuck it on ITV, it might do 4m. Do I want more? Of course, I do."
