US election, iPhone 5 and celebrities dominate Yahoo search in 2012

The US presidential election, Apple's iPhone 5 and Kim Kardashian were the top three most searched terms on Yahoo worldwide in 2012, it has been announced.

In the UK, Kate Middleton unseated Tulisa Contostavlos as the most searched celebrity, although the X Factor judge was a new entry on the list.

Last year's top celebrity, former X Factor judge Cheryl Cole, was bumped to third place, according to a year-review report published by the search engine giant.

The US election dominated the world searches on Yahoo, with the term 'election' beating Apple's new smartphone, the 'iPhone 5', into second place. 'Political polls' also ranked in eighth place.

Kim Kardashian was third on the list, ahead of model Kate Upton and also the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton. Whitney Houston, the singer who passed away in February, was the sixth most searched term on Yahoo.

The London 2012 Olympics was unsurprisingly the top UK search term on Yahoo in 2012, followed by Liverpool FC, Amazon Kindle and then Manchester United.

Despite being second in the world list, Apple's iPhone 5 only managed second place on the list, although the iPad tablet computer came in sixth.

Kate Middleton was the most searched-for celebrity on Yahoo in the UK, rising from third place in 2011. Tulisa Contostavlos came second, followed by last year's top celebrity Cheryl Cole and Kim Kardashian, who climbed from tenth place.

Boyband sensation One Direction were a new entry at number six and Prince Harry - the subject of a press furore this year over naked pictures of him posted on the internet - was another debutant at number seven.

The most frequently asked question on Yahoo UK in 2012 was "how to make money", followed by "Who unfollowed me?", referring to the process of losing followers on microblogging site Twitter.

Also in the list was "who killed Frank Foster?" referring to a storyline on Coronation Street, and "what is a pleb?", referring to the alleged comments of an MP about a policeman.

Apple dominated the most top-searched gadgets list on Yahoo Worldwide in 2012, with its new products, the iPhone 5, iPad 3 and iPad Mini, ranking as the top three most searched tech terms.

But man rival Samsung also fared well, with three of its mobile devices ranking in the top ten.

Yahoo also revealed that the iPhone 5 was the biggest 'obsession' of the Yahoo worldwide audience in 2012, beating 'political polls', 'The Hunger Games', erotic novel 'Fifty Shades of Grey', 'One Direction' and smash hit song 'Gangnam Style'.

The Big Bang Theory was the most search-for TV show overall on Yahoo; 'Call Me Maybe' by Carly Rae Jepson was the most searched song/music lyrics; and What is SOPA was the most-searched question, referring to the controversial US anti-web piracy legislation that was put on hold earlier in the year.

The Kate Middleton topless photos controversy was the most searched-for scandal on Yahoo, ahead of the Jackson family fight and the doping scandal surrounding cyclist Lance Armstrong.
