BSkyB and Chrysalis to launch Sky News Radio

BSkyB and Chrysalis Radio have announced plans to launch a 24-hour news radio service on the soon to be awarded second commercial national digital multiplex.

The two companies make up the consortium bid for the licence headed by Channel 4.

If the bid is successful, the service, to be known as Sky News Radio, is intended to be launched next year, with access via the internet and Sky’s digital satellite platform to follow.

The 24-hour rolling news service will bring up-to-the-minute news and analysis from the UK and around the world.

John Ryley, head of Sky News, said: "We’re delighted to be working with Chrysalis to expand our involvement in UK radio. This partnership will build on Sky News’ strength in rolling news, extend the reach of the Sky News brand and increase choice in news radio in the UK."

Chrysalis' existing London rolling news station, LBC News 1152 AM, will also be incorporated into the joint venture, and will be rebranded as Sky News Radio for London.

The station will become a regional sister station to the national Sky News Radio service, with relevant local news, traffic/travel, weather and sport for London retained as part of its output.
