The first edition of Call Clegg went ahead this morning on London station LBC 97.3 FM, with the Lib Dem leader responding to questions from the public.
Ahead of the first broadcast, Clegg said that he wanted to use the show to better understand how the public was feeling towards the policies of the Coalition, and he certainly found out today what one person was feeling.
In a scathing attack, someone called John from Woking told Clegg that he had "torn up" his Lib Dem membership after almost 40 years due to the party's actions while in government with the Conservatives.
The man, who said he was an ex-County Councillor in Surrey, said that he was "ashamed of what the party's doing".
"I am a Liberal Democrat who has just torn up his membership card. I just joined the party first in 1973 and I'm afraid I cannot now say that I want to represent the Lib Dems," he said.
"I'm an ex-County Councillor in Surrey and I'm ashamed of what the party's doing."
As Clegg sat there stunned, the man pushed on with his attack. He asked Clegg if he had his own membership card, and then read out the message that is written on it.
"[It says] the Liberal Democrats exist to build a fair, free and open society in which we seek to balance the values of liberty, quality and community, and in which no-one will be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity," the man said to Clegg.
"Can you tell me how you reconcile that with this government's attacks on the poorest in society?"
Clegg stuttered at first in his response, but said that he was "immensely proud" that the Liberal Democrats had stepped up to deal with the UK's economic crisis at "some considerable political cost".
Elsewhere on the show, Clegg admitted that he was given a "big green onesie" as a present but has not yet worn the garment.
After being asked a question by a caller from his constituency in Sheffield, Clegg said that the adult sleep-suit was still in its packaging.
He said that if he does wear it then it would be in the "privacy of his own home", and refused to be drawn on whether prime minister David Cameron also has a onesie.
Call Clegg will go ahead live every Thursday on LBC 97.3 FM, hosted by Nick Ferrari.
