Danny Cohen, currently head of E4, is to become controller of BBC Three, the BBC has confirmed.
Cohen is following in the footsteps of former BBC Three controller Julian Bellamy, also a former head of E4, who returns to Channel 4 shortly to become head of programmes.
Director of BBC Vision, Jana Bennett, said: "I'm delighted Danny is joining the television channel team in BBC Vision. He's someone who absolutely understands what young adults are looking for and will bring his flair for innovation to his commissions across all genres."
"His knowledge and impressive track record will continue to strengthen BBC Three as it grows in reach and approval," she added.
Cohen worked in documentaries for five years before heading Channel 4's factual entertainment department and digital channel E4 for the past 14 months. During this time he has overseen shows such as acclaimed drama Skins, as well as being forced to publicly defend Celebrity Big Brother during the race row earlier this year.
Cohen said: "I believe BBC Three will play a central role in the debate about what public value means for young audiences as we create a whole new generation of programmes across all genres."
According to Broadcast, Cohen has told colleagues at Channel 4 he will begin his new job within months.
Acting BBC Three controller Emma Swain, BBC creative head of comedy talent and comedy north Kenton Allen, ITV2 controller Zai Bennett and ITV controller of daytime Liam Keelan had previously been linked to the BBC Three role.
