Actor George Sewell dies

Celebrated character actor, George Sewell, has died aged 83.
Famous for roles in 1970s cop show Special Branch as Detective Chief Inspector Alan Craven, and as Colonel Alec Freeman in cult sci-fi series UFO, he also appeared in many films including Mike Hodge’s Get Carter, starring Michael Caine.
Making his acting debut at the age of 35 after a career in the RAF, the Navy and as a coach company courier, Sewell went on to appear in Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased), Z Cars, Softly Softly, Doctor Who, The Power Game and Public Eye.
In 1993, he appeared in Jasper Carrott and Robert Powell sitcom The Detectives as Supt Frank Cottam, sending up his own Special Branch character, and had parts in Doctors, Heartbeat and Casualty in recent years.
