Virgin Media has today announced the launch of TCM HD and Cartoon Network HD on its cable TV platform, bringing the firm's total HD channel lineup to 39.

This year, TCM will also broadcast a range of TV shows in native HD, including Band of Brothers, Deadwood, all new Wild Boys and Hell On Wheels, from the makers of Mad Men and The Walking Dead.

In addition to TCM HD, Virgin also welcomes the TCM 2 channel to 417 on its TV guide.

With just a few weeks to go before the half-term school holidays, Turner's Cartoon Network goes HD on cable TV, offering shows such as Ben 10, Adventure Time, The Amazing World of Gumball and Star Wars: The Clone Wars in extra detail.

With today's launches, Virgin Media now offers 39 high definition channels on its platform, but that still lags behind pay-TV rival Sky, which offers 65 HD networks to its subscribers.

Under Virgin's deal with Turner Broadcasting, the firm will add a range of content from Cartoon Network, Cartoonito and Boomerang to its Virgin TV Anywhere service available across a range of devices, as well as 3D content later in the year.

Virgin Media TiVo customers can from today access a range of Ben 10 and The Amazing World of Gumball content on an exclusive Cartoon Network TiVo app.

"With half-term and major movie events like the Oscars just around the corner there's plenty of action and entertainment for all the family on Virgin Media TV in HD."

Turner UK general manager Anthony Lukom added: "It's fantastic news that Virgin Media customers now have the opportunity to watch TCM's vast library of films and first run cinematic series such as Hell on Wheels and Wild Boys, as well as Cartoon Network's much loved kids' shows in HD quality format.

"This is another exciting step in our network's continuing evolution, giving our growing audiences outstanding viewer experiences."

TCM HD and Cartoon Network HD are available at no extra cost to XL TV subscribers. TCM 2 is available to M+ TV subscribers and above.
