BBC News reports that as a newsreader and chamber music concert introducer, Hughes became one of the most distinctive voices on the channel.

Of reading the news, Hughes said in the past: "It isn't something that it is absolutely necessary for men to do... you don't have to have a deep voice to sound authoritative."

Hughes worked on Radio 3 until 1983 and described her departure as "reluctant". In the following years, she lent her voice to audiobooks.

She passed away at a nursing home in Winchester, Hampshire on Friday (February 8).

Hughes leaves a daughter, Emma, and two granddaughters.
