Journalist and broadcaster Jeremy Paxman is to give this year’s MacTaggart Lecture at the MediaGuardian Edinburgh International Television Festival in August.
The longest serving presenter of the BBC’s Newsnight will talk to the annual gathering of the broadcasting industry on Friday August 24.
Peter Barron, 2007 MGEITF advisory chair and editor of Newsnight, said: "I know from experience that there is always intense interest in what Jeremy has to say. I’m delighted we’ve persuaded Jeremy at last to do the MacTaggart and look forward to hearing his thoughts on politics, power and the media."
The MacTaggart Lecture began in 1976 in memory of the acclaimed writer and director James MacTaggart. Known for producing controversial and ‘agenda-setting’ speeches, previous speakers have included the likes of Dennis Potter, Michael Grade, Rupert Murdoch, Ted Turner, Lord Birt, and last year former ITV chief executive, Charles Allen.
Tim Hincks, MGEITF executive chair and chief creative officer at Endemol UK, added: "Jeremy’s MacTaggart lecture is a truly mouthwatering prospect. By focusing on politics, journalism and power, this MacTaggart promises to reach the parts others have failed to reach. Without doubt it’s the hottest ticket in town."
