Grandstand was given the RTS Television Sports Awards Judges' prize last night, celebrating the 48 years the show was on air.
At the ceremony, held at London's Savoy, Grandstand was branded a "national institution" and a "leader in sports television around the world". First shown in October 1958, the last editions of Grandstand were broadcast at the end of January this year.
Sky One's Big Ron Manager took home RTS sports series of the year and sports programme of the year was won by Channel 4 Racing's Cheltenham Gold Cup Day coverage.
The BBC's Hazel Irvine picked up sports presenter of the year for presenting the Winter Olympics, Match Play Golf and World Snooker final. Sports commentator of the year went to ITV's John Rawling for The Big Fight Live. Martin Brundle scooped the 'pundit' award for ITV's Formula One coverage.
The lifetime achievement award went to long-serving golf commentator, Peter Alliss.
