"Jonathan is an experienced and talented broadcaster who presented on Radio 2 for ten years and was very popular with our audience," a BBC spokesperson explained.

"He is standing in for Steve Wright while he is on holiday and we hope listeners will enjoy listening to him on the network for these few days."

Describing the stint as a one-off, the same spokesperson ruled out a full-time return for Ross.

"Jonathan is returning for this one-off stint of holiday cover for Steve Wright," the spokesperson continued. "There are no current plans to bring him back permanently."

Ross recently ruled out a return to the BBC, telling DS that he would definitely not be hosting any primetime shows following the fallout from the infamous Andrew Sachs call back in 2008.

"I have no problem with the BBC, but I have no intention of going back there to host shows," he said.
