The number of DAB digital radios sold in the UK has reached the five million mark according to figures released today by the Digital Radio Development Bureau (DRDB).
Statistics compiled by GfK, the consumer electronics industry's research body, show nearly 10 million people are tuning in to DAB radios in the UK. The number of sets sold has increased by three million in less than two years.
DAB set penetration now stands at 18% of UK households, only a few percent under the DRDB's target figure of 20.6% by the end of 2007.
DRDB has also announced that its chief executive Ian Dickens is to step down in the autumn. Dickens' departure has not come as a surprise, as colleagues have known for months of his intention to leave, as he plans to "sail round the world." The group is now actively seeking a new chairman.
Ralph Bernard, DRDB chairman, said: "Ian has been a superb champion of DAB digital radio and is rightly credited with helping to pull the industry together to make it happen. Today's announcement of five million sales underlines how successful he has been."
