MySpace launches TV platform

Social networking site MySpace has launched MySpacetv.com in order to compete with YouTube in the online TV space.
The site, which goes live today, will act as a platform for video sharing and for MySpace to launch branded channels. It is being launched into 15 international territories, in a similar way to YouTube's country-specific versions of its video-sharing website.
MySpace general manager for video, Jeff Berman, said: "We have seen explosive growth of uploading and sharing of video. It has become a bigger and bigger part of the way MySpace users consume culture. We want to make it easier to use and more appealing."
Last week Sony signed a deal with the company for five-minute "minisodes" of 1980s comedies such as Silver Spoons and Diff'rent Strokes. It is likely MySpace will also draw content from its owner News Corporation and the Fox TV network.
Content partners National Geographic, The New York Times and Reuters are also believed to have signed up to partner with the company.
