C4, Five launch "viewer trust initiative"
Published Tuesday, Jul 24 2007, 16:17 BST | By Neil Wilkes
Channel 4 and Five have teamed up for a new initiative to address the issue of viewer trust following more allegations of malpractice throughout the industry.
The pair will co-author an "Independent Producer's Handbook" - to be published in the autumn - providing a guide to the regulations covering the production of programmes.
Both channels say they are reviewing their processes and contracts, providing "enhanced training" for producers where necessary.
"The question of viewer trust is the most serious issue we face today," said Five chief exec Jane Lighting. "Our viewers, brand and reputation are the most valuable assets we have."
Her Channel 4 counterpart Andy Duncan said that the broadcaster was taking "appropriate steps.. to ensure viewers are not misled by our programmes".
He added: "I hope the plan of action we are publishing today makes clear how seriously Channel 4 takes the issue of trust and how determined we are to prevent our hard-won relationship with our viewers being undermined by careless or dishonest actions."
