The prime minister is to hold talks with Ofcom and the DCMS as part of an effort to "restore public faith" in broadcasters.
Asked about the phone-in scandal at Prime Minister's Questions today, Gordon Brown acknowledged the "very serious matter" that has gripped the TV industry. "It affects the confidence that people have in television stations," he replied to a question from Labour MP Rosemary McKenna. "Those people are running competitions and running telephone lines where they are relying on people in the general public to have confidence in what they are doing."
He added: "I will certainly have talks... but it is a matter for these authorities to sort out and they should do it quickly."
