Jane Root, the US-based president and general manager of Discovery Channel, is to quit the broadcaster and return to the UK.
The move has sparked speculation that she is being lined up to become controller of BBC One alongside previous colleagues Jana Bennett, now BBC head of vision, and Mark Thompson, now BBC director general.
The former controller of BBC Two said in a statement: "After much consultation with friends and family, I have decided that this is the best time for me to leave Discovery and return to the United Kingdom to pursue other opportunities in the media industry."
Root will be succeeded at Discovery by John Ford, who rejoined the broadcaster in September after a spell at National Geographic.
