UBC launches music download service

Published Tuesday, Dec 4 2007, 12:24 GMT | By James Welsh
UBC has launched its Cliq mobile music download service on 21 commercial radio stations.

Mobile phone users with the free Java-powered Cliq application on their device will be able to call up the songs playing on a "Cliq-enabled" radio station and buy them instantly. UBC estimates that approximately 85% of current phones are compatible with the Cliq application.

"The impulse purchase of music is the first application of the technology," explained UBC in a statement today. "Listeners are offered the application free and their first song for free by
texting to a short code number."

The technology will be embedded in Pure digital radios next year, and UBC hopes that Cliq will become "an industry standard for interactive commerce". It has invested £1.46m in developing the service.

The download cost per track will be £1.25.
