Thompson warns on licence fee top-slicing

By
BBC director general Mark Thompson has warned Parliament against weakening the corporation by top-slicing the licence fee and using it to fund public service broadcasting on other broadcasters.

While giving evidence to the House of Lords Communications Committee, Thompson said: "I would need much convincing that top-slicing the licence fee is the right way forward. I believe there are very, very strong arguments against top-slicing the licence fee."

Top-slicing the licence fee would result in the BBC handing over some of the revenue raised to fund, for example, children's programming and regional news on ITV.
