Hulu, the video on demand service jointly run by NBC and News Corp, recorded 63m streams in April, according to the first usage figures released since its formal launch two months ago.
Nielsen Net Ratings data showed that users were watching an average of more than two hours of video a month on the service.
Nielsen said Hulu served more video streams than any other network television website, making it a clear world leader as a VOD service operated by traditional broadcasters.
In some respects Hulu is similar to the BBC's iPlayer. It is backed by major broadcasters NBC and News Corp-owned Fox, and offers free streaming of recently-aired programmes.
Popular shows on Hulu include Battlestar Galactica, The Simpsons, Arrested Development and Family Guy.
The service differs from the iPlayer, which recorded 21m views in April, in that its content is syndicated to numerous popular websites such as AOL, Yahoo and MSN, and can be embedded in any webpage. Shows on the iPlayer are only available via the dedicated BBC websites or download application.
Hulu does not allow downloads and, unlike the iPlayer, offers a range of archive programming and movies.
In that it is a advert-supported, joint venture between more than one commercial broadcaster, it is also a model for the VOD service being developed by BBC Worldwide, ITV and Channel 4 under the name Project Kangaroo.
