Ofcom to investigate 'X Factor' complaints
Published Monday, Dec 17 2007, 18:18 GMT | By James Welsh
Media regulator Ofcom is to investigate Saturday night's X Factor vote after receiving 80 complaints from viewers who said they were unable to vote for Rhydian Roberts.
Record traffic levels were seen on Digital Spy's X Factor forum as viewers reacted both to the result and claims of voting difficulties.
Several threads have been posted containing reports from people who said they received engaged tones or error messages when attempting to vote for Roberts, although other posters also reported that they encountered issues when attempting to vote for winner Leon Jackson.
X Factor production firm TalkbackThames said this evening that it understood some Virgin Media customers may have been unable to get through due to high call volumes on that provider's network, but added it did not believe there was any bias towards one particular contestant. ITV has said that there "were no problems with the voting", and Roberts' uncle Nigel told the South Wales Echo that neither his nephew nor the Roberts family wants there "to be any appearance of sour grapes".
