'Corrie' to stay on Quay Street

'Corrie' to stay on Quay Street
ITV has abandoned plans to move its Manchester operations, including the Coronation Street set, to the MediaCity UK development in Salford.

The broadcaster had planned to join the BBC at the new development, which is scheduled to open in 2011. Instead, ITV will remain at its current base on Quay Street in Manchester, which was opened as a studio complex for ITV franchisee Granada in the 1960s.

"Negotiations with the Peel Group over the possible move of ITV's Manchester operation to MediaCity in Salford were terminated by ITV this week after the developer dramatically scaled back its financial commitment to the ITV element of the project," ITV said. "As a result we will remain at our Quay Street base for the foreseeable future."

The decision means that ITV's complex on Quay Street will become the home of shows displaced by the closure of the former Yorkshire Television studios in Leeds, including Channel 4 quiz staple Countdown.
