The return of Merlin and the Panorama documentary on sex abuse allegations against Jimmy Savile saw iPlayer generate 214m requests in October alone across TV and radio.
This broke down as 165m TV requests, the highest ever figure, and 49m radio requests, down slightly on the 50m in September.
iPlayer saw an increase in demand across most devices where it is available, but particularly mobile and tablets, which now contribute almost a quarter (23%) of all iPlayer requests.
But the BBC also said that the spike in Player usage was down to its autumn TV schedule.
The return of BBC One's Merlin dominated the month, including the first three episodes of series five featuring in the top ten most popular iPlayer programmes.
Panorama's documentary on sex abuse allegations against the late BBC star Jimmy Savile attracted almost 1m requests, and the start of new BBC drama Hunted also proved popular.
