Peter Berg signs to direct 'Hercules'

Peter Berg will direct a new Hercules movie for Universal.

Hercules: The Thracian Wars will be based on a five-issue comic series by Steve Moore. Ryan Condal will write the screenplay.

Berg, along with Jonathan Glickman, Roger Birnbaum, Gary Barber, Sarah Aubrey and Barry Levine will serve as producers.

Levine told Variety: "What resonated for them was that this was character driven, about a character who’s more man than god, with conflicts and redemption."

Recent popular adaptations of the Hercules story include the Kevin Sorbo TV series and Disney's 1997 animated feature.

Berg has previously directed The Kingdom and Hancock. He is also committed to helm a remake of sci-fi film Dune for Paramount.
