The director of the new Superman film, Bryan Singer, has denied claims that his version of the comic book hero is gay.

The assertion came after the character's sexuality was debated in the Los Angeles Times and on various internet entertainment sites.

According to the BBC, Singer remarked that Superman was "probably the most heterosexual character in any movie ever made."

The president and publisher of DC Comics Paul Levitz said, "We were all scratching our heads. He's not a gay character."

Superman Returns opens in the UK on July 14.
