Penn was offered part of Joker

Sean Penn was the first choice actor to play the Joker in the upcoming Batman movie, reports suggest.

The role for the movie The Dark Knight was eventually accepted by Heath Ledger, but not before Penn was considered.

The Oscar winner was offered the part, but turned it down, a rumour heightened in its likelihood by Christian Bale's revelation that the producers were hunting the actor.
