There are fears that the new Leonardo DiCaprio movie Blood Diamond will cause damage to the legitimate diamond trade in Africa.

IMDB reports that the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the US, Paul Simons, said that "significantly less than one percent" of the world's rough diamond supply comes from regions that are unstable.

Simons' view was opposed by Charmian Gooch of Global Witness, who states: "The story is clear: blood diamonds are still being sold, and consumers cannot completely trust that these blood-soaked gems are being kept out of stores."

Blood Diamond, which also stars Jennifer Connelly, revolves around the civil war - funded by diamonds - that raged in Sierra Leone during the 1990s.
