Critics praise new 'Rocky' movie

The new Rocky movie has received a warm reception from critics.

Since the reincarnation of the film was suggested, both the idea and star Sylvester Stallone, have come in from strong criticism. The actor, now aged 60, has been particularly mocked for returning to a role he first stepped into 30 years ago.

However, audiences have apparently been wowed by the first showings and writers have widely reacted very positively.

In the sixth Rocky outing the boxer is seen running a restaurant after the death of his wife when he decides to return to the ring.

Eclipse magazine praised Stallone, who put in months of training to get in shape, saying he achieved "the near-impossible" to impress audiences.

Stephen Holden, writing in the New York Times said the movie "goes the distance almost in spite of itself". And William Arnold, for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, even claimed the film "had me in tears before it was done".

Even professional boxer Amir Khan, who was also at the movie's premiere, praised Stallone's commitment in building up his physique to pull off the role. "It just shows his heart and determination," he declared. "If I look as good as that at his age I will be happy."
