The film is based on Bryan Lee O'Malley's graphic novel that revolves around a young man who finds he can only win the heart of his dream woman by defeating her evil ex-boyfriends.
Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz) will direct the film based on a script he co-wrote with Michael Bacall.
Wright has previously worked with ex-Arrested Development star Cera in a viral video used to promote Superbad. Wright played a sarcastic interviewer opposite an increasingly irritated Cera and Jonah Hill.
Universal is looking to begin production in the autumn.
