The former Grey's Anatomy actor will star alongside Forest Whitaker in the Weinstein Company production, claims The Hollywood Reporter.
It will be his first major film role since he was dropped from the ABC medical drama last June.
Taraji P. Henson, Robbie Jones, Jackie Long, Eric Hill, Bow Wow, Lil' Wayne, Irma Hall, Jaren Einsohn, J.S. Smoove and Chyna Mcclain are also among the cast of the fact-based film, which is set in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
The story revolves around high school basketball coach Al Collins, who assembles a team of players who had previously attended five different schools. He manages to lead them to the state championships with the help of an assistant coach (Washington).
Tim Story is helming the movie from a script by Robert Eisele (The Great Debaters) and Greg Allen Howard (Remember the Titans).
Filming begins in New Orleans this week.
