The Wonderful World of Woody Allen

Woody Allen has always had an ear for a zinger and has peppered his 40+ movies with countless classic one-liners (a personal favourite, Alvy Singer in Annie Hall: "Hey, don't knock masturbation. It's sex with someone I love."). Despite his reluctance to ever revisit his early days as a stand-up comic, that type of wit and wisdom shines through even when he's talking out-of-character. We listened in to the Cannes press conference for his new movie You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger and cherry-picked the best quotes for you.

On life:
"I have a grim, pessimistic view of it, I always have since I was a little boy. It hasn't gotten worse with age or anything. It's a grim, painful, nightmarish, meaningless experience."

...and how to survive it:
"It was said by Nietzsche, it was said by Freud, it was said by Eugene O'Neill. One must have one's delusions to live. If you look at life too honestly and clearly life does become unbearable because it's a pretty grim enterprise."

On his deep artistic relationship with London:
"I like making films there but it doesn't influence me. If I couldn't make them there I could make them in New York very easily but just for more money."

On getting old:
"I find it a lousy deal. There's no advantage in getting older. I'm 74 now - you don't get smarter, you don't get wiser, you don't get more mellow, you don't get more kindly, nothing good happens... It's a bad business getting old. I would advise you not to do it if you can avoid it."

On why he pens stories about older guys with younger girls:
"It's a good gimmick for drama and laughter. In all my films I've only really used it two, three times and it's a good laugh getter. It's a provocative kind of thing... I don't really do it very often."

On why he no longer stars in his films:
"For years I played the romantic lead and then I couldn't play it anymore because I got too old. It's no fun not playing the guy who gets the girl."

….and what it's like directing today's leading ladies:
"You can imagine how frustrating it is when I do these movies with Scarlett Johansson and Naomi Watts and the other guys get them... I like to be the one that sits opposite them in the restaurant and looks in their eyes and lies to them."

On death:
"My relationship with death remains the same. I am strongly against it."
