With the 2011 Academy Award nominations being announced today, we've decided to trawl through our archives to present a look back at some of the Oscar contenders kind enough to share some time with us over the last few months. Click 'play' below to see Oscar nominees in conversation with DS.
127 Hours
We kicked off 2011 by sitting down for an extended chat with Danny Boyle, whose Slumdog Millionaire follow-up 127 Hours has an 'Adapted Screenplay' and 'Best Picture' nomination. Boyle was in buoyant mood as he discussed that infamous amputation scene and the similarities to his earlier film Trainspotting.
The Kids Are All Right
Mark Ruffalo checked in with us around the time of Kids' UK debut at the London Film Festival to talk about playing the "bio dad" in Lisa Cholodenko's comedy-drama. Ruffalo has a 'Best Supporting Actor' Oscar nomination, while a 'Best Picture' and 'Best Actress' Oscar for Annette Bening are also possibilities.
Toy Story 3
There wasn't a dry eye in the house when the credits rolled on Toy Story 3 last summer. Fighting back the tears, we caught up with director Lee Unkrich to discuss the pressure and expectations surrounding a new Woody and Buzz and which characters he has the most affection for. Toy Story 3's Oscar nominations include 'Best Picture', 'Animated Feature' and 'Adapted Screenplay'.
Winter's Bone
We were bowled over by Jennifer Lawrence's turn in Winter's Bone last year, so much so in fact that we gave her a DS Movie Award - that makes it two-for-two with Oscar nominations if you count Carey Mulligan from 2009! Here, Oscar-nominated duo Jennifer and Winter's Bone director Debra Granik give us the details on their low-budget drama.
Inception
The most impressive original sci-fi blockbuster since The Matrix, Inception may have seen director Christopher Nolan snubbed by the Academy but the film has racked up an impressive eight Oscar nominations in total. Below we ambush Leonardo DiCaprio at the Inception premiere shortly after discovering that he "doesn't go backwards".
The Fighter
We'll be honest, there is no real reason to have this video in here other than it's vaguely amusing and the two chaps sitting next to Mark Hamill are The Fighter's Oscar-nominated screenwriters Eric Johnson and Paul Tamasy. We suspect that the malfunctioning lift has some kind of magical awards-giving power!
