'Paul' still
An eclectic mix of movies hit Blu-ray and DVD shelves this week, including the Oscar-nominated True Grit, Simon Pegg's latest comedy Paul and a re-release of the extremely well-regarded Apocalypse Now in HD. We preview five big new home releases which might be worth considering.

True Grit
Starring: Jeff Bridges, Hailee Steinfeld, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin
Format: BD, DVD
The movie: The second film adaptation of the novel after the 1969 film of the same name, the Coens' Western is a fine addition to most film-lovers' collections. Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon are in fine form as two men who join up to hunt down Josh Brolin's villainous Tom Chaney, but it's Hailee Steinfeld, 13 years old at the time, who steals the spotlight with an amazingly mature performance as the revenge-seeking Mattie Ross. She earned an Oscar nomination for this movie.
Bonus features: Several featurettes including 'Mattie's True Grit', 'Dressing for the 1880s' and 'Recreating Fort Smith'; theatrical trailer; cast featurette.

Paul
Starring: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Kristen Wiig, Jason Bateman
Format: BD, DVD
The movie: Simon Pegg and Nick Frost celebrate Steven Spielberg's classics of the '80s as they embark on a road trip across the US with Seth Rogen's wise-cracking alien in tow. The geek references fly thick and fast as the duo find themselves on the run from Sigourney Weaver and Jason Bateman's shady government agents. This is one sure to satisfy fans of Spaced and Shaun of the Dead.
Bonus features: Commentary with director Greg Mottola, producer Nira Park and Nick Frost and Simon Pegg; eight behind-the-scenes featurettes; making of documentaries; bloopers; 'Who the hell is Adam Shadowchild?' featurette; 'Simon Silly Faces'; galleries.

Apocalypse Now
Starring: Marlon Brando, Martin Sheen, Robert Duvall, Laurence Fishburne
Format: BD
The movie: The classic Vietnam War flick from the mind of Francis Ford Coppola makes its way onto Blu-ray, starring Martin Sheen as Captain Willard who is tasked with finding and taking out the rogue Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando). Available to watch in HD, now's as good a time as ever to experience this breathtaking movie. The special edition also comes with more than nine hours of extras.
Bonus features: Feature-length documentary on the making of the film; video interviews with Coppola, Sheen and screenwriter John Milius; commentary with Coppola; deleted scenes; screen tests; cast featurette; excerpts from Milius's script; Coppola interview with Roger Ebert; storyboard gallery; marketing archive; collectible booklet and postcards.

Sanctum 3D
Starring: Richard Roxburgh, Rhys Wakefield, Alice Parkinson, Ioan Gruffudd
Format: BD 3D, DVD
The movie: Despite James Cameron's name plastered on just about every poster and promo, Sanctum 3D performed rather modestly when it was launched in cinemas. Still, on Blu-ray, supporters of 3D will be able to see everything pop out from the comfort of their own home when watching the likes of Richard Roxburgh and Ioan Gruffudd explore the perilous and dank caves.
Bonus features: Deleted scenes; commentary; 'Sanctum: The Real Story' featurette.

Superman: The Motion Picture Anthology
Starring: Christopher Reeve, Gene Hackman, Margot Kidder, Brandon Routh
Format: BD
The movie: With next year's reboot on the horizon, Superman buffs may appreciate this Blu-ray collection containing all five previous Superman films. Christopher Reeve first plays the Man of Steel in 1978's Superman: The Movie before reprising his role three more times in Superman II, Superman III and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. Brandon Routh then takes over as Clark Kent in the 2006 film Superman Returns. This special 8-disc release is a must-have for fans of the iconic superhero.
