This week's DVD, Blu-ray releases: 'Hanna', 'Hop'

By
Hanna
After last week's Red Riding Hood release, today sees another retelling of a classic story in Beastly. Elsewhere, Atonement duo Saoirse Ronan and Joe Wright team up again in the kinetic Hanna, Russell Brand is entertaining as an animated bunny in Hop, and Friends's David Schwimmer shows he's just as handy behind the camera in Trust.

Below, we list the biggest Blu-ray and DVD releases in store shelves right now.

Hanna
Starring: Saoirse Ronan, Eric Bana, Cate Blanchett, Tom Hollander
Format: BD, DVD
The movie: This action thriller focuses on Hanna (Saoirse Ronan), a 16-year-old girl who has been trained by her father (Eric Bana) to be an assassin. Hanna is eventually ready for her mission to kill CIA officer Marissa Wiegler (Cate Blanchett), and what follows is an intense and captivating cat-and-mouse game between Hanna and Marissa. The action is superb, while the acting is of top-quality all-around - especially from Ronan, who proves she is certainly one to watch in the future. Atonement director Joe Wright also impresses, adding his own stylistic touches to make Hanna a striking and memorable film.
Bonus features: Commentary with Joe Wright; alternate ending; deleted scenes; featurettes including 'Adapt or Die', 'Central Intelligence Allegory', 'The Wide World of Hanna' and 'Chemical Reaction'; promo.

Hop
Starring: James Marsden, Russell Brand, Kaley Cuoco, Hank Azaria
Format: BD, DVD
The movie: Though Easter this year has long gone, the younger folks may still enjoy this live-action/CGI hybrid flick with comedic actor Russell Brand providing the voice of the animated rabbit E.B. In Hop, E.B. runs away to achieve his dreams of becoming a famous rock drummer, unwilling to take over from his father as the Easter Bunny. He soon crosses paths with and forges an unlikely friendship with Fred O'Hare (James Marsden), an unemployed man and perennial underachiever. Much like many other movies of its ilk, Hop doesn't try to be groundbreaking, but it has its charms here and there that can be appreciated.
Bonus features: Featurettes including 'The World of Hop', 'Emotion in Motion: The Dance of Ken Daurio' and 'Pink Beret Tracker'.

Beastly
Starring: Alex Pettyfer, Vanessa Hudgens, Mary-Kate Olsen, Peter Krause
Format: BD, DVD
The movie: In a modern twist on the classic Beauty and the Beast fairytale, Alex Pettyfer plays Kyle, a handsome but terribly arrogant student who has a spell inflicted on him by witch Kendra (Mary-Kate Olsen - perhaps the highlight of the entire film). Gone are his good looks, and in come baldness, tattoos and scars. Kyle is then told that to reverse the transformation, he needs someone to proclaim his love for him. Enter the kind-hearted Lindy (Vanessa Hudgens). Though its conclusion is ultimately predictable, Beastly is not a bad option if you're a fan of either Pettyfer or Hudgens.

Trust
Starring: Clive Owen, Catherine Keener, Liana Liberato, Jason Clarke
Format: DVD
The movie: We close this week's roundup with a curveball. While his former Friends co-stars have continued to be successful on screen, David Schwimmer took a different route after the American comedy ended in 2004, opting to go behind the camera. Trust is his latest project, a dark and horrifying story about 14-year-old Annie (the talented Liana Liberato) who is targeted and becomes a victim of an online sexual predator. Clive Owen and Catherine Keener are sublime as Annie's parents, trying to come to terms of what happened to their daughter, but Schwimmer should also be credited for delivering such a hard-hitting and moving drama and getting some truly powerful performances out of the actors.
