5 must-watch October movies: 'Footloose', 'Tintin', more - video

'Tintin' International Poster
Caught between blockbuster and awards season, October sees movies from both camps hitting the big screen. Coming soon is the daring and dramatic We Need to Talk About Kevin sitting alongside Steven Spielberg's eagerly-awaited The Adventures of Tintin. And of course, it wouldn't be the month of Halloween without a high profile horror release...

Digital Spy previews five of the must-see movies for October below.

Footloose
Release Date: October 14
Why you should see it: Though this long-in-the-works '80s revival once had Zac Efron pegged for the lead role, it's newcomer Kenny Wormald who has stepped into Kevin Bacon's dancing shoes. Footloose may have a cheesy and unlikely premise, but we're hoping for two hours of breezy, escapist fun from this remake.

Contagion
Release Date: October 21
Why you should see it: With Steven Soderbergh still hinting at retirement, Contagion could be one of the last chances to see the A-list director flexing his muscles on the big screen. And what a cast he's assembled - Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Kate Winslet and Marion Cotillard are at the heart of this viral outbreak thriller. A definite must-see, catch Contagion (zing!) as soon as you can!

Paranormal Activity 3
Release Date: October 21
Why you should see it: Normally we'd be a little reticent to get on board quickie, churned-out franchise horrors (see Saw), but the first Paranormal Activity was a genuinely effective movie and this third instalment has a pair of intriguing directors in Catfish's Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman. This time the action heads back to the '80s as they see how sisters Katie and Kristi first encountered that pesky demonic spirit.

We Need to Talk About Kevin
Release Date: October 21
Why you should see it: A searing, tortured performance from Tilda Swinton and stunning direction from Lynne Ramsay (making her first movie in almost a decade) first impressed us at Cannes earlier this year. Now, this adaptation of Lionel Shriver's acclaimed novel will open to the public at the London Film Festival before its cinema debut on October 21. WNTTAK almost plays out as a suburban horror film. It's a tough watch but worth every minute.

The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn
Release Date: October 26
Why you should see it: Steven Spielberg has been chasing the movie rights to Tintin since before Raiders of the Lost Ark. Now, with the help of cutting-edge motion capture technology and producer Peter Jackson, he's able to breathe three-dimensional life into Hergé's cartoon creation. Jamie Bell stars as the quiffed hero, with able support from Daniel Craig, Andy Serkis, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.
