Digital Spy previews five must-see movies for December below:
Hugo
Release Date: December 2
Why you should see it: Martin Scorsese celebrates cinema with this 3D family movie, which sees Sir Ben Kingsley play a toyshop owner who turns out to be pioneering A Trip to the Moon director Georges Méliès. A charming and spellbinding film that's suitable for all the family.
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
Release Date: December 16
Why you should see it: Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law are back on Baker Street, but this time they're facing scheming arch-adversary Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris). The first Sherlock Holmes was a pleasant surprise with its breathless action and witty script. More of the same please, Guy Ritchie!
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Release Date: December 26
Why you should see it: David Fincher follows up his Social Network success with this fast turnaround adaptation of Stieg Larsson's acclaimed novel. Noomi Rapace's interpretation may still be fresh in the memory, but newcomer Rooney Mara looks to be her equal if the early trailers are anything to go by.
Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol
Release Date: December 26
Why you should see it: Tom Cruise is back in daredevil mode for his fourth outing as Mission: Impossible's agent Ethan Hunt. This time around the IMF must go into 'Ghost Protocol' in order to clear their name. Look out for Cruise fearlessly scaling the world's largest building, the Burj Khalifa, in a vertiginous action sequence.
The Artist
Release Date: December 30
Why you should see it: To add a bit of variety to your December cinemagoing experience, why not take a trip to see black and white movie The Artist? Packed with French and US stars, this centres on a silent movie actor who worries about his career as talking pictures arrive. It might even prove to be a dark horse at next year's Oscars.
